Factors to Consider When Buying an RV Automatic Transfer Switch
When you’re on the road, there’s no telling when or where you might find yourself in need of power. That’s why it’s important to have a reliable and easy-to-use ATS . Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for an RV automatic transfer switch:
Size:
When choosing an RV ATS, one of the most important factors to consider is size. The size of the unit will determine how much power it can handle and how many appliances can be connected to it.
A small unit may be adequate for a campeRVan or small RV, but if you have a larger RV with multiple slide-outs and several appliances, you’ll need a larger unit. It’s also important to consider the amount of power you’ll need during an outage.
If you only need to keep a few lights and the fridge running, a smaller unit will be sufficient. However, if you need to power a furnace or air conditioner, you’ll need a larger unit that can handle more amps.
Built-in Material:
When choosing an ATS for your RV, it’s important to consider the built-in material. The most common type of ATS is made of polycarbonate, which is a strong, durable material that can withstand high temperatures and large amounts of wear and tear.

Frequency:
When choosing an RV ATS, one of the most important considerations is the frequency at which it operates. Most devices are designed to operate at a frequency of 60 Hz, which is the standard frequency for household AC power in the United States.
However, there are some models that are designed to operate at a higher frequency. The frequency at which an RV ATS operates will determine how well it performs its intended function.
Power Delay:
Automatic transfer switches are a vital component of any RV, as they ensure that shore power and generator power are seamlessly swapped in the event of an outage. However, it’s important to consider the power delay of when choosing the best RV transfer switch.
Power delay is the amount of time it takes for an ATS to connect to the generator power supply once shore power has been lost. As such, be sure to choose an RV generator transfer switch with a shorter power delay to help avoid any potential complications.
Number of Circuits:
When choosing an RV ATS, one of the most important considerations is the number of circuits that it can handle. A single-pole switch can only handle one circuit, while a double-pole switch can handle two.
If you have a large RV with multiple appliances and devices, you’ll need a switch that can handle all of them. The number of circuits is usually displayed on the front of the switch, so be sure to check before making your purchase. With a little bit of research, you can find the perfect switch for your RV.
Safety:
When choosing the best RV transfer switch, it is important to consider the safety of the device. This is because these devices are designed to transfer high voltages from one circuit to another.
If the RV ATS is not properly protected, it could cause an electrical shock or fire. There are four main safety features to look for when choosing an RV automatic transfer switch: high&low voltage protection, over load protection, short circuit protection, and over temp protection.
These four safety features are essential in an RV ATS, so be sure to look for them when making your selection.
Ease of Use:
Some RV transfer switches can be a bit complicated to use, so it’s important to choose one that is easy to operate. Some come with pre wired transfer switches, while others have to be wired.
Additionally, some models come with a digital display that shows the current status of the switch. These features can make using an RV ATS much simpler, so be sure to look for them when making your selection.
UL/cUL Certified:
UL/cUL Certified RV ATS is the best choice when choosing an RV automatic transfer switch. This certification means that the product has been tested and proven to meet strict safety standards.
UL is a world-renowned leader in product safety testing, so you can be confident that a UL/cUL certified RV ATS will provide the highest level of safety for your family.

Xantrex’s automatic transfer switch solved the matter of continuously powering a non-critical 120 VAC load for added convenience. My system will not switch to an alternate AC source when the DC input from the electrical device battery bank is so low that the inverter shuts down. the automated switching is well made and works perfectly. It’d be nice if the unit included and installed the secondary plug and outlet, but I knew before the time that when ordering this unit I’d have to provide my very own plug and outlet.
